The Power of Encouragement Among Believers – Weekly Devotional

As I was reading through 1 and 2 Timothy, a passage in the first chapter of 2 Timothy caught my attention. Paul mentions a fellow believer, Onesiphorus, who visited him while he was in prison. Paul describes how Onesiphorus brought him much-needed encouragement and refreshment during a difficult time. Moved by this act of kindness, Paul prays for blessings over Onesiphorus and his household.

What stood out to me was how Paul, despite enduring persecution and imprisonment for the sake of the Gospel, expressed deep gratitude for Onesiphorus. In a moment when Paul felt abandoned and alone, not only did he recognize God’s presence with him, but he also saw how God worked through Onesiphorus to bring comfort and companionship.

This reminded me that God often works in ways we don’t expect. While we might look for His help in one specific way, He often moves in many ways—some we can see and understand, and others beyond our comprehension. It’s a call to trust Him, to yield to His timing, and to wait patiently for how He will work things out in our lives.

  • As Believers who seek God’s righteousness, are we looking to see who we can refresh in the Lord?
  • Do we perceive other’s gifts as being needed in the Body of Christ? Are we willing to bless them and encourage them in the midst of hardship and despair?

2 Timothy 1:15-18

“15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— 18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.”

Deserted But Not Alone
There are seasons in life when you may feel abandoned or wonder if God is distant. But rest assured—God is a present help in times of trouble. He goes before the righteous, guiding their steps and working all things for good. In these moments, focus on the calling God has placed on your life. Reflect on what He has already done and the promises He has spoken over you. Don’t allow the enemy to sway your faith with doubt or fear. Instead, confess your struggles and uncertainties to God, trusting in His faithfulness. When you emerge from that place of trial, you will know it was God who carried you through, proving once again that He is faithful to those who earnestly seek Him.

Refresh Me in Christ
As believers, we are called to refresh and encourage one another in Christ. Who in your community are you seeking to uplift and strengthen? My hope is that this message reaches you where you are and inspires you to continue walking in godliness, rooted in the truth of Scripture. Strive to be known as someone who upheld the faith, unashamed of your circumstances, and eager to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

To have faith in Christ is to trust the unseen, all-powerful, all-knowing God. Step into the role of a brother or sister in Christ, walking in unity through the Holy Spirit. God can use you to be a spiritual blessing to someone else. Your words and the spirit you carry could be the very encouragement they need for a breakthrough or a reminder of the hope found in Jesus.

We are not called to serve God in isolation. Instead, we are to let our light shine before others, as Jesus said:
“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16

Also, remain open to receiving from others. Take what they share with you to God in prayer, allowing Him to confirm and strengthen you through the fellowship of His people. When the Body of Christ comes together to uplift and encourage one another, it pleases the Lord. Let us walk in that unity, refreshing and being refreshed in the Spirit.

2 Timothy 4:9-22

9 Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers. 22 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for searching my heart and providing for me in ways I didn’t even realize I needed. Your ways are higher than mine, and I trust in Your perfect plan. Thank You for the gift of companionship, and I ask that You bless me with relationships with fellow believers who will encourage me and strengthen my faith.

Let me also be a blessing to others—both to those in the faith and to those who have yet to know You. Grant me boldness to speak Your Word into the lives of others, sharing Your love and truth without fear. Help me to be present and intentional in walking in Godly fellowship, so that together, we may be one in You, Lord.

The same Spirit that raised You from the grave is alive in us, lifting us up and empowering us to live for Your glory. To Your name, Jesus, be all the glory forever and ever. Amen!
